Shade Mtn Ride in Central PA

(updated: Aug 17, 2006)

Jul 21, 2006 -- I rode Shade Mtn today in Bald Eagle State Forest which is located in Central PA. We were up visiting my mother-in-law's place and the park is close by. The day was sunny and hot and I had nothing to do so it was time for a ride. Good thing I always bring my bike wherever I go. My wife dropped me off at 104 and Shade Mtn Rd. That was a mistake. What a climb! It felt like around six miles of uphill to the trailhead. And it was really hot. I think I also saw a bear run off the road up ahead. As if my heart wasn't pounding enough. I started making lots of noise.

It was a good loose rocky downhill, the kind that is hard to go fast on because the rocks keep knocking you off your line. Now I know why you have to shuttle - there's no way you'd want to go back up this. When I got back down, I couldn't call my wife because I have no cell phone signal (Sprint sucks!) so I just rode about 5 miles on 522 back to the house. Anyway it was fun. Here's a few photos I took along the way.

Got rocks?

Self-portrait. I had to hurry the bugs were eating me alive!

Nancy and I will be in State College in the beginning of Sept. Maybe we'll ride this or Tussey Mountain.

Was the downhill gnarl? Those rocky sweeps look like they'd throw you good.

I'd go to Rothrock (Tussey). Those trails are just as rocky. Great trails. Wanted to go there but not enough time.
