Kitzuma Trail Info
(updated: May 2, 2009)
Kitzuma is located roughly six miles outside of Asheville right along I-40 heading East. It is really easy to get to since it is right off the highway. You take Exit 66 and head up Old Hwy 70 E. When you get to the intersection where Old 70 bears left, go straight onto Royal Gorge Rd. Keep going to the end where there is parking. At the end of the parking area is the start of the trailhead.
You will start by climbing about 600 ft vertical over one mile with 13 switchbacks to Kitzuma Peak, then it's downhill from there for three miles or so. Once you get to the bottom you will exit at the Old Fort picnic area. You will have to climb back out for 5 miles on the old highway 70 E which is now nicely paved and closed to motor vehicles. This will eventually take you back to Royal Gorge Rd. and your car.
Alternatively, you can park at the bottom at Old Fort and do the road climb first. To get to the bottom drive down Old 70 E. (also known as Mills Creek Rd.) which turns into a fireroad. Take the fireroad all the way down (it takes a while). Go straight and continue on 70 E. until you get to Old Fort picnic area. If you keep going on 70 E it will bring you back to I-40.

They have changed the lay out some and put up a sign
no bikes can go to Kitsuma Peak now :(.... Before you get to the top the new trail cuts off to the right and goes to Youngs Ridge...
