Starting a new club - Cape Fear SORBA

(updated: Nov 10, 2009)

Well I forgot to check the weather until Monday afternoon then saw that a tropical depression was headed our way. So no Tues night ride. If I had been on the ball I could have scheduled the ride for Monday. Should have. Instead after work Monday I decided to just go out to Blue Clay with the dog. I got there at 6:15pm in the dark and was all alone. Riding at night alone in the woods...not so bad here. Back in upstate NY it was a little creepy riding in the game lands, nobody for miles and the bears around. Wouldn't want to startle a mother and her cubs.

If we get the Tues/Thurs night rides going again those are fun. But for those without lights there should be a group ride on the weekend. It is much more fun to ride with other people, and another benefit is that you will get faster and develop skills more quickly.

Which brings me to my topic...starting a new SORBA chapter here in Wilmington. We need 50 members to start a chapter. We have at least 27 now. Once we have 50 we will be able to use IMBA insurance and I promise you that if you join and we get to 50 we will get a new place to ride in our area next year. But without this chapter it may not happen because we won't have the insurance to cover us.

The new organization will also need folks to manage different aspects of the club, such as a ride/social coordinator (so we can have those weekend group rides), trail coordinator, pump track coordinator, media coordinator, and the usual Pres, VP, Sec roles. If interested let me know.

You can join SORBA through, or through Click on Membership and choose your location. You will automatically be redirected to SORBA (SORBA is the southeast regional division of IMBA). Choose At Large/Unaffiliated. Later, once we are an official chapter, you will be added automatically to the new chapter. As soon as we get 50 members we are going to put on a time trial event at BC. For members it will cost maybe $5, for non-members it will be $30 - $40 (after which you will be a member). Money raised will go directly toward improving the trails. We are putting together a wish list for specific things we need or would like to do. If you have suggestions, please list them here.

Also, as Barry pointed out on the forum, $12 of your $30 membership fee comes directly back to the Cape Fear SORBA chapter to be used on local trails. When we get 50 members we will have 50 X $12 = $600 in the club account.

Starting a SORBA chapter is the right thing to do now that the mtb community has grown significantly here the last couple of years. Please consider joining so we can take the next positive step for trails in our community, not to mention supporting mtn biking everywhere.

Could the insurance cover the River Lights area trail?

It covers, as i understand it, any trail building operations that the Cape Fear SORBA chapter would take part in. So in that way, yes it would cover the River Lights area trails. Or any others for that matter. Steve has talked about trails that Brunswick County wants to build. Thats the one i am excited about. So what do we need to do? SIGN UP PEOPLE! You sign up and we can build trails!!!!!!!

It also includes a year subscription to Bicycling and Mountain Bike magazines. You can choose to opt out and actually get $7.00 of your membership fee back. And you get tons of discounts on things from online stores to car rentals. The membership pays for itself and more, especially if you plan to do even one of the TT's.

Hey Erol, Don't we need to get the 50 by November 21st or wait until February before we become official? If this is true, we need everyone to sign up asap!

Erol, I'm guessing we register unaffiliated for now? Right? Thanks

Yes for now Register unaffiliated. Cape Fear SORBA isn't currently listed. Once we hit our number of 50 then we will get listed and people can join the club when they sign up online.

FYI: We need to get 50 members for the Cape Fear SORBA chapter by Nov. 21st! If we do not then we can not become an official chapter until another year has passed! That means, while we may be able to run Time Trials, we will not have the insurance to work on or build new trails! So let this be some incentive to hurry up and sign up! If we don't get 50 we don't get to try and build new trails for the next year! Hustle up people!!!

Anyone riding down Hwy 133 from Leland to Southport look to your right just before you cross over Town Creek and you will see the entrance to the new Brunswick Nature Park. This is the reason we need this SORBA chapter. This is a golden oppurtunity for new trails.Entrance to the park has a very nice new sign at the road.

I attended the November IMBASORBA meeting yesterday in Gainesville GA and presented our case for a chapter in front of the SORBA board and all other SORBA chapters. We were given a chapter by a unanimous decision. Our chapter is on a probation period until the next meeting on March 20 at Tsali. At that meeting there will be another vote and if we have 50 members at that time the vote will be yes. We still do not know the count on our members. I was told to start acting as a chapter, which means we need to plan a meeting (when we know all the names of our members) elect officers. Until then keep signing up new members and as soon as we get more information we will get it posted.
