Topsail beach ride

(updated: Apr 5, 2012)

Some photos from my ride last Sunday at Topsail. I started about a mile north of the Surf City pier. Wind was fierce but mostly West to East. I could have gone in either direction but I headed North. I think it's a slightly longer ride in that direction, about 13 miles for a 26 mile round trip. The entire island would be a 50 mile ride on sand, and given the time required you can't count on the hard sand at low tide the entire time. It's a formidable undertaking that I plan to complete someday. Best time to do it is in the off season, unless you have a Pugley or Fatback and enjoy having people gawk at you all the time. You know you love it.

Empty beach. I think I passed 10 people the entire ride.

Rolling over the earth, one turn of the crank at a time.

The north end of the island.

North end.

Something I find ridiculous. No surfing? Where? The beach?

Beats the trainer any day.

Much better than the trainer and a hell of a challenge against the wind. Do you start or finish against the wind?

Usually I start against the wind. But in the summer going back with the wind will make you very hot. This ride it didn't matter which way I went because the wind was out of the West and I was heading North.

26 miles on sand sounds perfect. Want to go again soon? I wonder what would happen if we brought some sort of kite?

Yes, bring a spinnaker. I've often thought about trying that. Sounds like we have to.

Low tide on Sunday is around noon. This would be a good day for a beach ride even if we started early in the AM because the tide would be heading out.

I am good for sunday and will even drive you in the jeep, assuming I can fit your big-tire bike on my roof rack.
