Wilmington Bike Thief
(updated: Nov 9, 2011)
Here's a video of a crime of opportunity -- a man steals a bike and it is caught on camera. This happened right here in Wilmington, but that shouldn't be any surprise. Bikes get stolen everyday in every city. The key is to minimize the likelihood that your bike will be stolen by locking it or keeping out of reach of thieves, such as inside a building.
I used to bring my bike inside the building where I worked in CA and put it in my cube. This has the side benefit of getting to gaze at it periodically during the day, instead of a dull fuzzy cubicle wall. This also alleviates some of the need to marvel at it at night in the garage with a beer (tell me you haven't done this).
If you don't ride your bike to work you can still benefit from the cubicle gaze by taking a photo of your bike and putting it in your cube at work. But please, have some other photos of your family nearby (or at least those photos of models in stores where they sell picture frames, especially if your family is really ugly, or you just want to balance your nice looking bike with good-looking humans) or people will think you are nuts. Unless they already do, like me. Then it doesn't matter. Put up lots of pictures of your bike and daydream of riding them while at work.
Sometimes when I go to the grocery store I just wheel my bike right inside the store and put it up front. Mainly because there's no bike rack (it's the suburbs, who would ride a bike here?). Nobody has said anything yet, but I don't think I'll push it to where I'm riding down the aisles towing a cart. Thought about it, though.
The funniest part of the video is when the thief finally takes the bike. He runs away carrying the bike instead of riding it. Obviously he's a better thief than a cyclist. Maybe he'll head to Blue Clay with it, to test it out on Barry's off-road greenway.
I'm waiting for someone in the comments section to tell the poor woman that it's her fault, because in Wilmington, motoring is mandatory, and if she had a car this wouldn't have happened.
As they say (at least on T-shirts): "There's a special place in hell for bike thieves." Now if I can just catch that log pile thief. "There's a special place in hell for log pile thieves" just doesn't have the same cachet to it.

Running off with a bike you just thieved is as smart as pushing the car you just lifted. I guess that's why there isn't a Nobel Prize for crime.

She could afford a surveillance camera but not a lock? Is this the same woman that leaves the pies in the open window to cool?
