2014 Wilmington FAC Ride
(updated: Feb 6, 2015)
Well it's been quite the challenge coming up with this video, and the reason is because I accidentally deleted all the footage. And then one day the MicroSD card was gone ... poof! Nowhere to be found. Then months later my son finds it upstairs on the floor, seemingly randomly out of nowhere. How it got upstairs I have no idea. I thought it was gone forever, sucked up by the vacuum or fallen down a crack or vent or something. I mean, the thing is so tiny.
I guess that lucky find meant I was supposed to recover the video, so then I set to the arduous task of trying to undelete what I had unthinkingly deleted. I had worked on it for weeks before I lost the chip, getting nowhere. Apparently, the GoPro uses a Rube Goldberg method of storing video files that no software can decipher. But after several more weeks of gnawing at it, trying all sorts of programs and techniques, most of which didn't work and were rip-offs, I finally figured it out using two free bare bones command line programs called TestDisk and PhotoRec.
I still lost some footage but I'm just happy to get the majority of it back. I had some issues with the sound as well so I just muted it for this video.
Michael and I finished the ride this year. I had 92.2 miles on the gps, but it doesn't track well in the woods, so it's probably a bit more than that. We rode all of UNCW campus trails, trails on Bald Head, a bunch of road, and of course, miles and miles of soft, sloped sand from Ft. Fisher to Bald Head and back, which seems to get worse every year.
So this year I'm thinking of taking the Pugsley. Yeah I'll suffer on the road, but I'll make up for some of it on the sand, and you're out for the entire day anyway so what does it matter at that point if it takes an extra hour or so? I mean, I start at 7am and don't get back until around 4pm. It's not a race, it's a unique ride, and a big commitment.
Chasing golf carts on Bald Head, or terrorizing the residents, not sure which one:

Nice job on the video...glad you recovered it! Let's plan another FAC ride for this spring and maybe we can get more people to join in on the insanity.
