It's not too late to ride a real mountain bike trail
(updated: Sep 18, 2015)
They still exist. Old school trails. Pre-IMBA trails. With seemingly no lines, no berms, no rollers, and none of this "flow" hungamerang (I totally just made that word up). When mountain biking was for the thick skinned and not for today's coddled trail users, coaxed into the woods by the thousands by IMBA designed trails-for-increased-rider-numbers. The more that pour onto the trailhead, the more the trails get dumbed down. All of them. It has to be that way, they say, because of increased usage. Bullshit. You caused this by making the trails too easy and encouraging people that wouldn't normally ride them. There has to be a bar. Every sport has a bar. You don't just go out and start dropping in half pipes. Unfortunately now the bar is sitting on the dirt, and even that's too high. It must be chopped out as if a root.
If you can ride a road bike on a trail, you're either Yoann Barelli, or it's not a mountain bike trail.
Sorry, as I get older I get more bitter. I see more and more trails utterly ruined. And I'm at the point in my life where I have no fucks left to give. I give zero fucks.
But there's still hope. There are still trails like these out there, where to ride them is to claw over that bar, to level up. And they keep the riff-raff out, because I like to get away from people. They are really annoying and whiney, said an old curmudgeon that strikingly resembles me.
This is one of those trails. Designated an IMBA epic, but built by locals who stuck to their East coast roots, and not some IMBA trail dogma. These are my favorite trails. A hidden gem in the middle of nowhere PA.
It will make you a better rider.
